Baby Signing has proved a useful tool for allowing caregivers insight into the minds of the children, and for children to assert control over their surroundings. We would like to help you to learn the skills to teach our programme in your childcare environment, as well as helping pass on the information/ skills to parents.

The programme is applicable to hearing babies / children and those who are deaf or have hearing impairments and / or other communication needs. We use NI regional British Sign Language Signs. BSL is a recognized language, so signs used will not solely be recognized in your facility. It also promotes good communication between hearing and deaf children (and those that use signs to aid communication).

The use of sign language has proven to be beneficial for children in a wide variety of settings. Sign language helps reduce frustration for infants and lowers incidences of biting in childcare settings. Signs like STOP, GENTLE, and SHARE help toddlers learn how to play together more cooperatively.

Using simple signs while speaking with preschool children, toddlers and infants is an excellent way to enable communication before, while and after they learn to speak. Preverbal children love to communicate by asking for food, nappy changes or simply identifying objects in their environment. Using signs with toddlers helps them learn colours, numbers and the alphabet as it demonstrates the concept, not only verbally, but visually and kinaesthetically also. Sign language has been shown to improve vocabulary, reading and spelling, self esteem and comfort with expressing emotions.

‘Signing and Singing’ sessions with children which include songs, puppets, rhymes and stories have also proved very popular.
